The Algerian Government is considering a project for a total revamp of the capital at a cost of USD 3 billion. The project's implementation is expected to be started by the end of March 2013 after obtaining the necessary approvals, a senior official told Zawya.
"The project's initial plan has been completed and is pending the parliament's final approval expected by March 2013, the project will consist of several stages ending in 2029," Mohammad El Saleh bin Akmoum, manager of tourism and handicraft in Algiers Province, ministry of tourism..
The project covers the construction of new tourist areas inside the capital, the modernization of the capital's infrastructure and construction of numerous hotels and re-designing landscapes around the city. The project will also include the development of 57 municipalities and 13 administrative zones covering an area of 809.22 km.
"The project will be completed in 4 phases up to 2029, as the plan is based on a program consisting of 82 projects in the fields of construction, roads and squares, multipurpose buildings and hotels, said Akmoum.
"This project will re-position the Algerian capital to become one of the largest cities in Africa and the Mediterranean and will positively revive the Algeria economy," said Fares Mesdour, professor of economics, University of Algiers.
