The cherry farmers of Alborz province broke the harvest record in the current year, said the director general of the province's agricultural jihad organization.
Masoud Karimi added that 53,200 tons of cherries are expected to be harvested from the farms of Alborz province.
The official noted that 240,000 tons of cherries are annually produced in the country, 13 percent of which pertain to Alborz province.
"The average cherry harvest per hectare in the province stands at 55 tons, which is considered a record in the world," he said.
The official said the average figure for developed countries and Iran is 35 tons and 9 tons respectively.
Karimi noted that 2.7 million tons of cherries are annually produced worldwide, pointing out that Iran, which produces more than 200,000 tons of the fruit per year, ranks third in the world in this respect.
"Some 217,000 tons of cherries were produced in the country last year," he said.
