MUSCAT -- Mohammed Taki Al Jamalani, director-general of Capital Market Authority (CMA), has emphasised the need for spreading awareness on insurance amongst the public here.

He was speaking at a function organised to distribute certificates to the participants of a four-day joint training course conducted by Al Madina Gulf Insurance (AMGI) Company at Infoline at Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM).

Jamalani said the insurance sector had played a critical and humanitarian role in readily settling all the claims from those affected by Cyclone Gonu, which occurred in the Sultanate in June.

He was happy to note that many young Omani entrepreneurs had taken insurance agency as their profession and stressed that such training programmes would ensure quality insurance services to the customers.

Ravi Shankar, GM, AMGI, in his speech, stressed on the importance of the event. The course covered various aspects of insurance to give the agents a definitive competitive edge in their area of work. The participants had all appreciation for the course, which brought them help and knowledge.

Another interesting aspect of Oman's insurance sector that the course threw light on was the spurt in the growth of entrepreneurs.

Said bin Abdullah Shirawi, who has been in this field for the last 15 years, is now an independent agent operating from Sohar. Although based there, he also covers areas such as Buraimi, Liwa and Bidaya.

"I have had the experience, but this training course has definitely helped sharpen my skills," Shirawi said.

On the other hand, Saleh Al Zedjali has had a different career run all together.

He has now moved on to develop his knowledge and area of business in the insurance sector.

"Oman's insurance sector is not new but, for me, it is a new area," he said. A staunch believer and supporter of insurance per se, Saleh Zedjali said: "I believe that with insurance you can protect yourself, your savings and investment. I felt that the concept brought in by Al Madina is modern and gives equal footing and understanding for both parties. It is not just a matter of selling a policy, but actually counselling an individual client. I see great opportunity for young Omanis to be involved in this rapidly growing sector."
