Dubai Whitney Houston’s death may have cast a pall over the Grammys on Sunday, but even the hasty tributes couldn’t take the shine off the other talked-about female artist of the night: British singer Adele, who took home six Grammys —and vowed to “never” write another breakup song.
Ahead of the awards, fans were sure of one thing: that the 23-year-old Londoner would take home at least one award. Whether she could still sing was in doubt: following vocal cord surgery last year, Adele was ordered to stay silent. To her fans’ relief, her deft performance of the record of the year, Rolling in the Deep at the ceremony proved she’s still got it.
Breakup songs such as Rolling, may have made her the only female artist since Beyonce to take home six Grammys in one night, but the “mouthy” Londoner now insists she’s done with them. Speaking to Vogue magazine, she says she finds people are surprised when they meet her because she’s not melancholy like her music. The singer vows to “never” write a breakup record again, adding she’s “done being a bitter witch.”
Rock band Foo Fighters and rapper Kanye West were also big Grammy winners on the night, taking five and four awards each respectively. The evening’s most moving moment came as Jennifer Hudson sang Houston’s I Will Always Love You, ending with the line, “Whitney, we will always love you.”
