Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) recently held an awareness meeting on the subject of student protection, with private school principals from across the capital invited to the event.

Principals and Adec representatives discussed the importance of adhering to the Student Protection Policy, which mentions safety of school buildings, transportation, and activities. The policy also outlines measures and procedures schools must ensure the protection of students from any harm.

“During the meeting, it was emphasised that a school principal must consider him or herself in the position of a parent who is responsible for each and every single student at all times, whilst they are in the school care, including travelling to and from the school using school transport and moving between, waiting for, and taking part in all activities organised by the school,” said Hamad Al Daheri, executive director, Private School and Quality Assurance (PSQA).

With regulations that outline duties and qualifications of bus drivers, monitors, and nurses, among others, Al Daheri said that such rules have been introduced as part of PSQA’s comprehensive education reform to protect students from any harm.

According to the student protection regulations and policies, Adec is committed to ensuring private schools in the emirate of Abu Dhabi provide a safe, supportive and disciplined learning environment for all students; that action is taken to prevent reasonably foreseeable harm to students and that, if and when an employee reasonably suspects harm or risk of harm to a student, he or she must immediately report it.
