The Abu Dhabi Men's College (ADMC) inaugurated yesterday its new Simulation Centre to give students a hands-on feel of the operation of a real oil refinery.

It is a contribution from Shell Abu Dhabi, and represents an effective combination of process, engineering and state-of-the-art technology, which plays an important role in complementing the Higher Colleges of Techn-ology's (HCT) initiatives in e-learning.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the HCT.

Dr Tayeb Kamali, Director of the ADMC, said the centre is the result of cooperation between the college and the company.

The system allows learning in interactive computer activities in a virtual reality setting.

It consists of four terminals for students, a console for the instructor, and supporting computer hardware. Other students can observe their activities at the terminals on a large central screen.

The instructor can decide which of the four terminals will be displayed and can also manipulate the system and observe the students' reaction to the changes.

The whole system is dynamic and the response of the students in controlling it has been excellent.

Zaharuddin Megat, Managing Director of Shell International Middle East, said the centre is very much part of Shell's commitment to help in educating and training young nationals.

"Shell supports programmes which help society and especially those that promote the development of young talent."

Mohammed Defrawi, Managing Director of Shell Abu Dhabi, added: "We have a close partnership with the HCT and we are certain that this simulation centre will offer the students a unique training environment at the college."
