The Iranian shoe market is mostly supplied by domestic producers, said the head of the Union of Iranian Handmade Shoes.

Rasoul Shajari also told ISNA that close to 5 percent of the country's shoe demand are addressed through imports.

"Domestic entrepreneurs produce quality shoes and export the surplus to neighboring nations," he said.
"Currently, domestic shoe output can meet the demand of 150 million people."

Shajari noted that footwear production has shifted toward sports and high-heel shoes.

"At present, 80 percent of raw materials needed by the shoe industry are secured domestically," he said.

Shajari said in May 2013 that domestic manufacturers are exporting Iranian shoes to Asian countries, including Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan.

He added that Iran's shoe industry can become a lucrative business and earn the country foreign exchange revenues, provided it is supported by state officials.

The official pointed out that a majority of shoe manufacturing industries are located in major cities, namely Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz and Isfahan.

"They not only meet domestic demand, but also have the capacity to supply regional countries," he said.

Referring to the recession that dominated the Iranian shoe industry a decade ago, Shajari stated that recent sanctions have had a positive impact on the output and helped develop the industry.
