Amman - The 8th Conference of National Tempus Program was held at the University of Jordan on Monday to discuss cooperation in higher education and research between Jordan and Europe.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Wajih Oweis said in a speech that participation in the event signifies the increasing interest in higher education and scientific research in Jordan as a major core element of national economic development.
"Your involvement also reflects your genuine interest in and desire to establish and strengthen progressive cooperation and partnership between Jordanian institutions of higher education and their European counterparts," he added.
He said that "as many countries in the world, especially with the current prevailing recession and political situation in the region and elsewhere, Jordan is facing a number of challenges in higher education and research".
The minister valued the role of Tempus and its contributions in the Kingdom, noting that Tempus has made excellent contributions towards the reform and development of higher education system and institutions in Jordan.
Ambassador/ Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Jordan Joanna Wronecka said that 5 Tempus projects involving Jordanian institutions were selected in 2012 from a total of 3 projects selected in 2011. "Within ERASMUS MUNDUS a new record of 4 new projects, (each of which included at least three Jordanian universities) were selected with an estimated mobility of around 190 Jordanians," she added.
The ambassador said that universities should not become business oriented factories of certified students, not isolated scholastic ivory towers, but the source of reflexion, critical thinking, research and practical ideas that societies need in order to improve and face old and new challenges.
The conference discussed a host of issues related to reforming higher education and means of boosting cooperation between Jordan and the EU in the higher education domain.
