Some 118 women have converted to Islam since the new year, a senior official at the Dubai Department of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has announced.

Iman Ismail Abdullah, the Director of the Women Da'awa (Propagation) Unit of the New Female Muslim's Section at the Department, explained: "The Muslim female preachers and scholars that are working with the Section have been working hard. Since January, the number of females who've embraced Islam has jumped up to 118.

"The new Muslims come from different countries such as China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kyrgizstan, Georgia and India," Abdullah said, adding: "The numbers are increasing in the UAE, especially in Dubai and Sharjah."

Aisha Mohammed Al Kash, the Director of the New Female Muslims' Section, believes that non-Muslims could also learn more about Islam through the media and by taking part in cultural contests.
