MUSCAT: Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), the company responsible for managing and operating Muscat International, Salalah, Adam and other regional airports, in cooperation and assistance of other stakeholders held a ceremony at the newly opened Adam Airport to celebrate the Renaissance Day by witnessing the inaugural of a test flight to Adam Airport.
The event was under the auspices of Sheikh Said bin Ali bin Nafal Al Mazhali, undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs, Ministry of Transport and Communications, in the presence of the wali of Adam and other dignitaries.
Adam airport is located approximately 30km from the historic town of Adam in wilayat Adam in the Dakhiliyah region.
The airport will initially be used for day VVIP flights. The capability to service night VVIP flights will be commissioned by early 2011.
The Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) is expected to be completed in 2012. When the airport will become commercial, the PTB will have a capacity to handle 250,000 passengers annually.
Adam Airport has a runway which is 4,000 metres in length and 60 metres wide. The runway is of 'Code F' standard of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). It is capable to accommodate the largest commercial aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380. It has a runway turning pad, apron to accommodate three aircraft and four helicopters, VVIP building, interim air traffic control facilities, meteorology office, general equipment workshop, aircraft handling vehicles and fire fighting services equipped with a fleet of four of the latest 6x6 fire fighting vehicles.
The construction of Adam Airport was split into three phases. Phase one and two have been completed by the local construction firm Strabag Oman, the work for which commenced in March 2007. Phase one included civil works providing utilities, fencing and road access to the airport site, and phase two included the construction of the runway and aircraft landing instruments. Phase three is expected to be completed by 2012 which includes the construction of the Commercial Passenger Terminal Building. The consultancy services for the new airport were awarded to Gulf Engineering JV with Pryde Schropp McComb.
The staff at Adam Airport have completed their training of international standards. The training was conducted by a specialist aviation training firm from the UK.
