27 January 2015, Dubai, UAE - One of Europe's leading heart surgeons has performed a revolutionary 'artificial heart' surgery demonstration at the Arab Health conference - marking the first time the pioneering procedure has been showcased in the Middle East.

Andre Simon, Director of Heart and Lung Transplantation at Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals, the UK's largest specialist heart and lung centre, performed the highly complex ventricular assist device (VAD) procedure simulation in front of an audience of leading regional and international medical leaders and UAE government officials.

"Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer in the Middle East, accounting for as many as 45 per cent of all deaths in the region," Dr. Simon commented. "The revolutionary VAD procedure has already saved thousands of patients around the world and we are pleased to showcase it for the first time in the Middle East at this year's Arab Health conference."

The VAD procedure involves the insertion of a mechanical pump in the left or right chamber of the heart, in order to support heart function in people who suffering from weakened hearts or heart failure.
