Berlin, Germany, recently hosted the Global Green Awards, to recognise global exemplars of sustainability innovation. The competition is tough: government, environmental agencies and companies with an environmental focus are selected for their creativity in pursuit of greater sustainability.

This year, Mr. Asrhaf Sameh attended to receive The Green Era Award and Green Economy Forum, on behalf of Renaissance, Oman. Mr. Sameh is responsible for the company's environmental management, and explained the project that won award: "Renaissance is always looking at how we can do better for the environment. Each year, we serve roughly 50 million meals, so sending our food waste to compost instead of landfill means that, from 2016, we are going to stop producing around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 per year - that's roughly 45% of our carbon footprint."

The International Green Era Award is run each year by the Association Otherways, France, and receives around 120 attendees from 45 countries. So what about next year? "Food waste was our major carbon output, but that's changed now," explains Mr. Sameh, "so we are focusing on energy consumption. We are launching a solar panel project at Fahud this week, which will reduce our carbon footprint further - that might be a good candidate for next year."
