DOHA: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) yesterday signed an agreement for a QR3bn power and water desalination project.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani and Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada witnessed the signing of contracts. 

The project, the largest of its kind in the region, will have production capacity 2,520MW of electricity and 136m gallons of water per day to meet the rising demand. 

Kahramaa owns 60 percent of the project, while Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Foundation own five percent each. 

The remaining 30 percent stake is owned by Mitsubishi Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company. 

Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President, Kahramaa, told a press conference that the project is expected to be completed by July 2018 to ensure enough supply of power and water in Qatar. 

Total power capacity will reach around 11,000MW after completion of the project. Mitsubishi Corporation is the developer of the project.

Fahad H Al Mohannadi, General Manager, Kahramaa, said the project is among one of the most important in the country in terms of size, quality and savings. 

Al Kuwari said tenders were invited and seven companies participated. Five were shortlisted and three could qualify for the project.

He said Kahramaa is ready to meet the increasing demand for power during summer. 

Kahramaa has launched a project this month to provide generators to people in case of outages and said power consumption usually increases during summer.
