MUSCAT --Tens of tonnes of fresh fish awaiting processing at Oman Fisheries' Masirah plant were destroyed during last weekend's storm, the company announced here yesterday. In other losses inflicted by the storm on its Masirah facility, a fishing vessel moored at the Masirah jetty was damaged, the company said. The storm also ripped roofing sheets off the main plant, ice plant and porta-cabins, while water ingress ruined the false ceiling electrical panels and lights in the main processing hall.
A portion of the compound wall was wrecked, while the cooling tower pump line was left broken. Around 23 tonnes of fresh fish stored in the processing hall was ruined. Company officials are also evaluating the condition of 90 tonnes of frozen fish for possible spoilage. Some minor damage was also reported at Oman Fisheries' Al Ashkara plant. Total losses inflicted by the storm were estimated at RO 150,000, the company said. "The actual cost will be known only after inspecting the affected areas".
