MUSCAT -- Representatives of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) recently took part in meetings held at the 111st session of the Council of the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture for Arab Countries and the 41st session of the General Conference of Arab Chambers that was held under the auspices of Dr Mustafa Osman Ismail, Adviser to the Sudanese President, in Khartoum, Sudan.

Participants included entrepreneurs and business owners, investors and heads of Arab Chambers of Commerce and Industry and representatives of a number of economic bodies and financial institutions.
Oman's delegation was headed by Khalil bin Abdullah al Khonji Chairman of OCCI, together with Saleh bin Mohammed al Shanfari, Head of the Omani business delegation.

Discussions at the meetings focused on strengthening joint Arab investments and mechanisms, in order to raise the bar so as to achieve Arab economic integration and increased trade between Arab countries.

This will allow member states to take advantage of opportunities and facilities available for investment and therefore support the development of common Arab plans and programmes.

Many topics and issues were also covered including the Federation's activities during the last period and Development Plan and Programme of Action of the union for the next period, as well as reviewing reports on projects, economic issues and joint Arab investment.

Besides this, the Conference of Arab Food Security, held under the auspices of Sudan's First Vice-President, Ali Osman Mohammed Taha, and in the presence of delegations of unions, Arab Chambers of Commerce and other stakeholders, discussed the role of the private sector in this regard.

Oman's delegation was headed by His Highness Sayyid Taimour bin Assad bin Tareq al Said, Assistant Secretary-General for Foreign Affairs.

In this context, The Research Council has been discussing the adoption of food projects for common Arab benefit with regard to the technology and resources available in some Arab countries that will allow for the achievement of Arab food security.

The conference put forward many of the opportunities available in this area and invited Arab investors to take advantage of them to the fullest degree possible.

The conference dealt with important areas covered in a number of working papers concerned with the global food crisis and its repercussions on Arab countries, as well as issues related to manufacturing, marketing and modernisation of food security.

The role of the private sector in Arab countries for achieving this and the banking sector in financing it was also outlined.

Sudan's President, Omar Hassan al Bashir, informed participating delegations about the importance of joint Arab economic action and the need to take advantage of opportunities, facilities and elements of investment relating to natural Arab economic integration and investment, requiring the Arab private sector to continue and intensify its efforts in this area.
