Dubai A new misdemeanour court was inaugurated yesterday at Al Muraqabat Police Station. The court was established to look into 240 cases per week in an attempt to speed up the adjudication process.

The new Dubai Misdemeanor Court will be held four days a week and two judges will preside over two sessions each, Chief Judge Ahmad Ebrahim Saif, Head of Dubai Criminal Court, told Gulf News yesterday.

Inauguration

Dubai Attorney General Essam Eisa Al Humaidan and Dr Ahmad Bin Hazeem Al Suwaidi, Director General of Dubai Courts Department (DCD), inaugurated the full-fledged court.

“Judge Mohammad Saad will preside sessions on Sunday and Wednesday, meanwhile Judge Ashraf Mamlouk will preside Monday and Thursday sessions.

The new court will look into minor crimes of suspects charged with issuing bounced cheques, consuming and possessing liquor, exchanging assault, having consensual sex, defamation and cursing.

This is a step that will minimise the heavy load of cases being handled by misdemeanour courts at the DCD’s headquarters.

During each session, 60 cases will be handled by the Al Muraqabat Court,” Chief Judge Saif told Gulf News.

Meanwhile Al Humaidan said the new court will speed up the process of litigation and adjudication of minor crimes.

Partnership

“This new initiative reinforces and confirms the remarkable and strategic partnership between Dubai Public Prosecution, DCD and Dubai Police. It also emphasises that our judicial system is fully integrated. This also reflects the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve a distinct judicial system,” said the Attorney General.

Al Suwaidi said: “Yesterday’s inauguration has come to facilitate and get the judicial cycle to move swifter. It also refines our (DCD) partnership with Public Prosecution and Dubai Police. DCD’s main goal is to cater a first-class and international-standard judicial service.”
