Sharjah: The municipality has allocated six designated parking areas for heavy trucks to reduce traffic congestion in several industrial areas, it was announced on Monday.
Engineer Sultan Al Mualla, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality, explained that the parking spaces were created to prevent heavy trucks from parking negligently on the citys roads, which ultimately fuels traffic congestion in the areas.
The allocated parking spaces will be in Al Sajaa and industrial areas 3, 6, 10, 12 and 18 and will accommodate up to 1,200 trucks.
Flouting rules
We have already received the allocated land and are working on the final preparations, and expect the parking lots to be ready within the next few months, said Al Mualla.
We have also received a number of complaints about trucks being stolen so by giving them their own parking spaces, it will be more secure and we expect that thefts will be prevented, he pointed out.
Al Mualla added that the new parking spaces will maintain the citys aesthetic image.
Previously, we issued warnings for truck drivers and set up warning signs for drivers not to park on the side of the road in industrial areas but they continued to flout the rules.
He added that a fee will be imposed for truck drivers to use the parking spaces, but that the charge has as yet not been set since the project is still under study by Sharjah Municipality.
Once the project is finalised, we will carry out a survey and if there is a positive response from truck drivers, we will then consider adding further parking spaces in more industrial areas, Al Mualla added.
