During the unveiling ceremony, several key committee representatives from the Guinness World Records were present to officially name the stupendous artistic piece the largest in the world.
Eng. Sultan bin Hamdoon Al Harthy, chairman of The Wave, Muscat, said: "The unveiling of the world's largest marble mosaic portrait at The Wave, Muscat represents the symbol of Oman's current historical milestone. This monumental masterpiece symbolises the nation's gratitude for the political, economic, social and cultural achievements that have blessed our beloved country since the reign of His Majesty the Sultan, the architect of Omani Renaissance."
"As Oman and its people prepare to celebrate 40 years of prosperity, we renew our solidarity and resolution to serve as a catalyst in economic diversification and national progression guided by Oman's Vision 2020," he added.
Designed and manufactured by natural stone experts Bramco Granite and Marble and K. A. Design, the mosaic portrait took nearly five months to assemble and involved more than 40 seasoned artists from around the world, who worked closely alongside prominent Omani artist Yousef Al Nahwy.
The portrait is made purely from a number of materials found in nature throughout the various regions of the Sultanate, including precious stones from the village of Rowdhah in Wilayat Mahdha, desert rose from Wilayat Ibra and pebbles from Wilayat Quriyat. In addition, several vibrant colours that reflect Oman's scenic landscape such as blue, red, golden brown and green were incorporated into the various elements of the portrait.
To ensure its authenticity, a meticulous and intricate selection process of stones and rocks was carried out to guarantee the precise resemblance of the original photograph selected from the archives of His Majesty's private photographer Mohammed Mustafa.
