Dubai - Empower, the world's largest district cooling services provider, today announced that its 2ndBusiness Bay facility (BB - 2) has attained a Gold rating in Leadership in Energy Efficient Design (LEED) as the first in the Middle East region. LEED certifications, granted by the US Green Building Council(USGBC), are a global benchmark in sustainable design.

"This LEED certification is a testament to the United Arab Emirates' emergence as one of the most dynamic markets for green buildings," said H.E Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer, Empower. "Sustainability is a core value at Empower and is integrated into our operations, as our plants use less energy to provide safe and reliable cooling services to thousands of people in Dubai."

Empower's 45,000 Refrigeration Tonne (RT) Business Bay facility came on- stream in August 2014. The plant is Empower's second facility in the Business Bay area and service buildings from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road.

Under LEED ratings, the facility follows the v2009 system, which is the most recent rating classification employed by the USGBC.

"We are honoured to be recognised by the global authority and certification body on sustainable design - LEED," continued Bin Shafar. "With this recognition, we hope that other developers use this as an example for their future plans."

Empower currently operates two district cooling systems in Dubai's Business Bay neighbourhood, providing 90,000 RT to around 90 buildings. The company is set to construct a multi- facility district cooling network in the area, which will provide residential, retail and commercial real estate developments with up to 300,000 RT of cooling services.

The company currently operates more than 1,000,000 million  RT portfolio and it provides environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments such as Jumeirah Group, Business Bay, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Ibn Battuta Shopping Mall, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Healthcare City, Dubai World trade Centre Residences, Dubai Design District, among others.
