Minister of Works and Housing inspects progress of work

Minister of Works and Housing, Fahmi Al Jowder yesterday visited the construction site of the King Hamad General Hospital to mark a million accident free man hours since construction work commenced in September last year.

The 312-bed general hospital occupies a 227,000 square metre site on the coast of Muharraq and when completed will have a total floor area of 64,000 square metres. There will be three separate four-storey buildings linked together by bridges.

In addition to providing general medical and hospital facilities, it will also accommodate a 250-seat conference room and will house Bahrain Medical University.

"The construction of the hospital is progressing according to the schedule and is set for completion by July next year," said Al Jowder during his visit.

The BD50 million main works contract was awarded to the Nass-Burhan joint venture in August 2006.

The minister said that works to date include the completion of underground piping to all three buildings, almost all other ground preparations and most structural work on the three buildings.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing works are currently underway and structural works for the service yard and in-ground services is progressing. External services and civil works have also begun.

"The creation of the hospital is a strategic priority for the ministry in its commitment to provide quality housing and public works services," the minister said, "The King Hamad General Hospital - through its provision of health services - will play a significant role in meeting current and future demands for public health services, given population and demographic developments in the Kingdom."
