Baghdad - The Ministry of Water Resources in the Federal Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) agreed on Wednesday on preparing plans to operate water resources projects and maintenance of storage, controling and irrigation projects.

Mouhammed Dari al-Shalabi, the advisor of the Ministry of Water Resources in the Federal Government told AKnews that the federal Ministry of Water Resources held a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources in the KRG and discussed the draft of coordination between the two ministries, as well as hydrological and climate information.

"The agreement of the two ministries also included facilitating the task of inspection teams and hydroelectric power stations planned to be established in Kurdistan region, the exploitation of groundwater resources to ensure optimal use of these resources and keep them away from pollution and depletion, in addition to taking necessary measures to prevent pollution of land, rivers and groundwater and not to make any adverse environmental change."

"The ministries agreed on exchanging technical advice and the development of agriculture, irrigation and water management in the Kurdistan region by encouraging the cultivation of alternative crops which need less water in addition to resistance to salinity and drought. The meeting stressed on the need to transform the traditional irrigation systems to field irrigation systems and the establishment of water users associations for the development of capabilities through holding technical courses inside and outside Iraq for the working employees in the formations of the federal and regional ministries."
"The meeting discussed the law of maintenance of irrigation and drainage No. 12 of 1995 and its amendement which are specialized for the sub-rivers as well as studying the possibility of the inclusion of special events of water and agriculture with the agricultural initiative for the Iraqi government to support the farmers without charge."

The Cabinet had approved on the plan of the Ministry of Water Resources for the next four years (2011 - 2014) which were  discussed by the Energy Commission of the Council.

The authentication came after the growing need for water due to population growth and economic development which is met by the decrease in this vital source and the deterioration of its quality as a result of the exploitation of large water resources in the riparian states on the international river with Iraq poses the best usge strategy of this vital resource and the rationalization of consumption in consuming sectors of water.

The plan includes a campaign to improve the performance of irrigation cannals through the usage of pipelines or hanged canals and improving the engineering situation of field irrigation through the usage of modern irrigation techniques, as well as preparing national strategic items to negotiate about international waters and improve the usage of ground water and sustain the processing of marshes with water through the establishment of necessary facilities and the expansion of studies of non-conventional water uses.

The UN report warned on Monday Iraq from the drought of Tigris and Euphrates in 2040, while the UNICEF celebrated on Tuesday in 23 Iraqi schools to raise the awareness in the process of consumption of drinking water, after the report which reveals that 50% of fresh water was awasted due to misuse.
