Abu Dhabi: The consumer price index (CPI) in Abu Dhabi rose 2.8 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year, increasing from 117.6 points to 121.0 points, according to Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD).
The rise in prices reflects the net change in the consumer basket prices (resulting from upward and downward movement) during the two periods compared.
The CPI increased from 118.4 points in March 2010 to 120.7 points in March 2011 or by 1.9 per cent.
A month-to-month comparison shows that the CPI decreased by 0.4 per cent to 120.7 points in March 2011, down from 121.2 points in February 2011.
The 2.8 per cent increase has led to an increase of 4.4 per cent in consumer prices for households of the bottom welfare quintile over the same period of comparison. As for the other welfare levels, consumer prices grew by 2.1 per cent for households of the top quintile and by 2.9 per cent for the upper middle welfare quintile.
This also contributed to a rise in consumer prices for national households by 2.9 per cent, and by 2.6 per cent for non-national households and 3.8 per cent for collective households.
Rises do not necessarily correspond to an increase in all goods and services prices that consist in the CPI basket, nor do they mean that all goods and services have increased by the same percentage [2.8 per cent in this case); for there are goods and services for which prices have risen at rates above the overall rate and others with rates of increase below the general average, said an SCAD spokesperson.
