World's foremostauthorities share highlights of Knowledge Management

Dubai, UAE:Global stakeholders highlighted the importance of knowledge management and accurate planning in optimizing business growth over two days, between 18-19 November, during the successful inaugural APQC MENA Knowledge Management conference held in Ritz Carlton, Dubai.

US-based APQC has partnered with the leading training and consultancy Arab firm,Projacs, in organizing itsfirst knowledge management (KM)conference held outside of the USA. The conference is focused on the theme "Knowledge Management: A Timeless Asset in Challenging and Changing Times", capitalizing on the increased interest inknowledge management processes in the region.

According to APQC CEO Dr. Carla O'Dell, "Dubai attracts investments not because of its oil, but because it fosters an environment of knowledge sharing and knowledge creation".With APQC's mission to share quantifiable learnings and best practices, she further states that "Dubai can accelerate its growth as a strategic hub and knowledge crossroads."

Pre-conference workshops were held on 18 November to develop the delegates' skills in KM strategy and a fundamental approach to KM--Communities of Practice--and gave a solid foundation leading to the conference,along with networking opportunities.

The second day conference kick-started with Dr. O'Dell's "Best Practices in Knowledge Management" keynote presentation,where she shared lessons from two decades of APQC's KM work with some of the best knowledge-driven organizations in the world."Our thought leadership, expertise and validated best practices have helped hundreds of companies worldwide with KM strategy and implementation," stated O'Dell.

A range of other sessions and speakers also added to this two-day event with presentations from key resource persons in and outside the field of KM including: NASA Chief Knowledge Officer, Dr. Ed Hoffman; Microsoft's Global Knowledge Management Lead, Jean-Claude Monney; Energy Venture's Operating Partner, SaadBargach; Schneider-Electric's Knowledge Management Officer, Louis-Pierre Guillaume. Mohammed Abdullah, Managing Directorof  TECOM Investments (Media Cluster), contributed to the occasion by shedding light on how Dubai Media City promotes the flow of knowledge and what impact it had on the region.

Several key topics emerged from the various presentations whichalso underlined the importance of knowledge management approaches in a global setting. These include:

·         Pioneering advancements across NASA to achievegreater integration of the agency's policy and direction 

·         Microsoft's 21,000-strong workforce leveragingknowledge as a competitive advantage which created greater business value, increase productivity and drove innovation

·         The power of knowledge management in the Oil & Gas industry. Knowledge sharing promotes organizational efficiency and clarity around quality improvement processes as witnessed by Bargach during his tenure at Schlumberger.

·         Augmenting employee engagement and business value through global communities

·         Measuring the impact and ROI of KM

An esteemed panel of KM practitioners from the Middle East, Europe, and the United States discussed which KM approaches they have used and what cultural modificationswerenecessary. Panellists also emphasized real solutions as well as lessons learned.

The conference was well attended with over 180 participants from the Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia, Greece, The Netherlands, France, India, UK and the USA.
