11 April 2017

Borouge received two of the prestigious Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Plastics Excellence Awards in recognition of its full polyethylene laminate for 100% recyclability under the category of ‘Best Sustainability Initiative in the plastics conversion industry’ and for a Borouge team who worked on ensuring absolute clarity of Borouge’s polypropylene by new Borstar® Random Technology under the category of ‘Best Researcher in Plastics and Plastic Conversion’.

The two awards were granted at the GPCA Plastics Excellence Awards which was held as a side activity of the 8th annual edition of GPCA Plastics Conversion Conference (PlastiCon 2017) that was organised in Abu Dhabi from 9-10 April under the theme of ‘GCC Polymer Value Chain: Creating Future Leverage’.

The winning awards

The first award is attributed to the newly developed Borstar® Random Technology which brings RG568MO, a polypropylene (PP) random copolymer that provides excellent aesthetics, clarity and organoleptics for transparent applications.

“We are so delighted to win this important award which is a result of our team work,” said Janne Lampela, Manager of Polypropylene Business Development, Borouge, and the winning team representative. “The award is an interesting reflection of rewarding for the efforts my team and I have invested. I sincerely thank GPCA and Borouge for giving us the chance to highlight our innovative work.”

RG568MO is the product of choice for transparent plastic containers such as food savers. The material, developed under the Borstar Nucleation Technology (BNT), has the potential to help converters to reduce energy consumption through better processability, contributing to environmental sustainability through carbon footprint reduction.

The second Award that Borouge received was under the ‘Best Sustainability Initiative in the plastics conversion industry’ was in recognition of Borouge’s Full PE laminate for 100% recyclability which has been a joint achievement between Borouge, Borealis and Unilever. “I would like to thank the judging panel of the GPCA Plastics Excellence Awards for granting us this prestigious award after considering the important role of the material that the joint team has developed in ensuring sustainability and recyclability,” said Peter Malmros, Application Development Manager at Marketing Centre Packaging, Borouge, who received the award on behalf of the three companies.

The material aims to replace multi-material film structures in flexible plastic packaging in order to give it a second life, and the mono PE material is the ideal solution for that.

“We at Borouge are so proud to receive these two credible awards from GPCA which clearly reflects Borouge’s continuous commitment to advance our innovation capabilities to maintain our leading position and enhance our competitiveness,” said Ahmed Omar Abdulla, CEO Abu Dhabi Polymers Company (Borouge).

“This is how the team work of our people is rewarded. With the creative minds we have on board and the advanced innovation technologies we use at our Abu Dhabi based Innovation Centre, Borouge continues to provide our customers with the best sustainable and value creating solutions. As long as our people have this passion for innovation, we are sure to bring the best solutions that benefit plastics converters as well as end-users,” said Wim Roels, CEO Borouge Pte Ltd. “

The GPCA Plastics Excellence Awards recognise outstanding initiatives in plastics conversion, plastics process improvement and product development by companies and individuals from the Gulf region who play an important role in the value chain of plastics production. The six categories of the Awards are designed to reward significant achievements that companies and individuals have made in the fields of material usage, design, manufacturing, processes and environmental performance.
