Dubai: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) announces the first edition of ‘Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert’ that will take place 4 – 7 March. As part of Dubai Art Season, the event aligns with the new cultural vision of Dubai launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in September 2019. As implemented by Dubai Culture under the guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Authority, this vision establishes the city as a global centre for art and culture, positions Dubai as an incubator for creativity, and ensures that Dubai remains a thriving hub for talent. ‘Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert’ will act as a platform to support and showcase emerging filmmakers and established ones locally and regionally.

The event is a unique concept for Dubai that celebrates emerging films and filmmakers, presented within the golden dunes of Al Marmoom Desert, whose environment represents the event’s primary inspiration. Visitors will be immersed in the landscape and gain a new appreciation for the dynamic ecosystem of Dubai’s deserts, which represents the heriateg and culture of the Emirate.

Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert aims to educate the public, particularly the younger generation, on the world of cinema from a regional perspective. It will also grant audiences the opportunity to be introduced to stories specific to the Gulf region as well as appreciate and learn about other communities and societies, thus propagating a culture of tolerance.

Dubai Culture will oversee all film selections and programming with the aim of strengthening and supporting local and regional filmmakers by offering them a platform to showcase their works as well as an opportunity to voice their challenges within the film industry. There will also be workshops for new talents and a series of masterclasses delivered by experts in the field to increase the level and quality of education about the film industry in the region.

By providing an opportunity for young filmmakers to present their work and have their films reviewed by professional critics, Al Marmoom will elevate the local and regional film industry as well as attract more opportunities for growth. Furthermore, it will also provide a supportive network for writers, directors, producers, actors, and all those involved in the many aspects of filmmaking.

Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture, said: “Hosting this important event in Al Marmoom will provide a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their work, which will provide more opportunities for collaboration, thereby increase the creative output of the next generation of filmmakers. By nurturing new talent and supporting the existing talent, this event will boost the film industry as well as highlight the identity, heritage, culture, and contributions of UAE talent to new audiences at home and across the wider region.”

“Furthermore, the setting of this event is crucial. The desert landscape directly connects with our culture in Dubai and offers an insight into our heritage. The inspiration for the event comes from the desert, and the stories on display reveal narratives about the environment as well as how it plays a role in the lives of so many people from the Gulf region, acting as an important element for visitors and setting this event apart.”
