A new report from Arab Advisors Group analyzes legal and illegal subscription-based TV content services in MENA. These services include: Satellite Pay TV, Internet Protocol Television (“IPTV”), Mobile TV, Subscription-based Video on Demand (“SVoD”), and Pirated TV content. The report analyzes and compares the availability and prices of each TV content service in the region.

Premium content is no longer confined to legal providers. Pirated platforms invaded the media industry as they offer legal providers’ premium content at competitive prices, driving premium content viewers to subscribe to pirated content services over legal ones. Legal content providers felt the pressure of piracy and took several measures to mitigate the impact of illegal content distribution on their businesses such as developing their own streaming applications and implementing price segmentation to their offerings.

Arab Advisors Group released a new report "Media consumption in MENA: the available subscription-based TV content providers". The report, which was released in November 2020, answers the following questions:

  • What are the legal and illegal subscription-based TV content services available in MENA?
  • What are the fees of pay TV, SVoD, IPTV, and pirated content in the Arab World?
  • Which subscription-based TV content service is the least expensive in the Arab World? And which is the most expensive?
  • Which Arab countries have restrictions on pirated TV content?

“The lack of political will to enforce existing laws has allowed the spread of pirated platforms in MENA. However, digital offerings when properly exploited will allow legal providers a good foot in the door to present compelling services beyond the availability of content.” Fayez Abu Awad, Chief Advisor to the Board at Arab Advisors Group, noted.

“After assessing MENA’s subscription-based TV content pricing (excluding mobile TV offerings), Arab Advisors Group has found that pirated TV content is the least expensive service in the region; the service is offered at monthly fees as low as US$ 1.25. Furthermore, pirated TV providers’ most expensive monthly offering (US$ 11.75) is less costly than legal TV content offerings which exceed US$ 90 per month.” added Hiba Rabadi, Arab Advisors Group’s Deputy General Manager.
