DUBAI – Offering its own climate system and brimming with sustainable solutions, the Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai brings its theme, ‘Uniting water, energy and food’, to life with an impressive cone-shaped vertical farm at its centre, growing 9,500 edible plants. All of which puts the pavilion in timely line with the key objectives of World Food Day (16 October).

Niels Bouwman, Director, Netherlands Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “The Netherlands Pavilion is a biodome: We harvest the water from the air, we grow our own food and we have our own solar panels to create energy.”

The pavilion uses Dutch technology to cool hot air from which water is extracted; the water is used to irrigate the vertical farm, for the pavilion’s drinking water and as part of the visitor experience – up to 2,000 litres of water is produced daily; and thin, plastic solar panels create energy, while allowing in daylight.

Bouwman said: “[The Dutch] are famous for our vertical farming, and it’s great to showcase it in a practical way, as an open farm – we have our own regulated temperature, our own irrigation system and our own lighting – which we can showcase to the world. This is the most sustainable Country Pavilion at Expo 2020.”

From curtains and canopies made from corn-starch to acoustic panels and tiles made from mushrooms, the pavilion showcases ground-breaking sustainable ideas, while approximately 95 per cent of the pavilion’s materials are reclaimed and will be used again after Expo 2020. The reclaimed steel walls, for example, will be used in a future project in the Gulf region.

Basil, mint, tomatoes, asparagus and oyster mushrooms are among the produce grown in the vertical farm and are used in the pavilion’s kitchen. Bouwman said: “Visitors are really enthusiastic and flabbergasted to see what we are doing here. People feel, taste, smell and touch what we’re creating – they are getting the full experience.”

Expo 2020 Dubai is a crucial platform bringing the world together to explore new horizons, showcasing breakthrough ideas and welcoming the best minds to enable action and inspire solutions to the greatest challenges that face the planet.
