“Think before you throw it away “says Jassim Seyadi, Chairman of the Bahrain Association for Parents and Friends of the Disabled.

The Association have collaborated with The Supreme Council for Environment and Crown Industries to deploy plastic recycling containers throughout Bahrain.

Don't throw it away, help us make a person with disabilities day’ is an innovative fundraising programme using recycling with two objectives;  to clean up the island and  to support the aim of the Association to raise funds to provide specifically modified wheelchairs for the disabled with limited financial ability to buy their own wheelchairs.

“We are collecting throw away plastic materials for recycling” adds Seyadi.  The plastic is then sold on to recycling companies to finance the purchase of the customized wheelchairs.

The Association have persuaded members of the Muharraq Municipal Council, - in particular Abdulaziz Al-Kaabi, Waheed Al-Mannai, Ahmed Al-Maqhawi and Saleh Bouhaza – to support the idea with the result that 8 containers have been installed.

The community partnership is as a result of a positive response from the members of the Council, the private sector, The Supreme Council of the Environment, the parents of the Association’s children and the wider community to raise community awareness of environmental protection and use waste to fund good causes. “The principles of

Don't throw it away, help us make a person with disabilities day’ are invaluable for social cohesion, social responsibility and awareness of environmental protection“ Seyadi, says.

Children with disabilities were encouraged to participate by the Association in a trial run. The enthusiasm and contribution of the 24 participants was recognized with a certificate, a commemorative shield and a gift.

Recycling Containers are located on the Budaiya coast, Isa Town Walkway, Khalifa Park, Askar Walkway, Tubli Walkway, Abu Ghazal Park in Zinj, Saar Mall, Hamala Hills Mall as well as in Dohat Arad, Adliya, Enma Mall, Wadi Al-Sail Mall.
