More businesses have set up shop in the UAE capital despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The number of companies registered with the Abu Dhabi Airports Free Zone (ADAFZ) increased by 109 percent in the first half of 2020 compared with the same period last year, the authority said on Sunday.

The majority of the firms that secured agreements with the authority were from the aviation, e-commerce and healthcare sectors, according to the zone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Airports.

There were many companies based in both Europe and the Middle East in the ICT sector, as well as logistics, pharmaceutical and consultancy management industries.

Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, chief executive officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, said the increase in the number of firms registering with the free zone “demonstrates” ADAFZ’s “role as a powerhouse that enables economic activity” across the emirate.

“Through its work, ADAFZ helps to supplement the comprehensive stimulus packages implemented by Abu Dhabi’s leadership, and ensures that international companies can continue to have a robust and reliable partner in the emirate,” Al Hasmi said.

The authority said it has also welcomed Honeywell and SMSA Express to its portfolio. Honeywell has just set up a personal protective equipment manufacturing facility in ADAFZ’s Al Ain International Airport free zone, while SMSA Express has opened a branch in the UAE capital’s airport free zone.
