Muscat - Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP) has initiated the pre-qualification process for developers to set up a new large independent water project (IWP) in Ghubra.
The proposed water desalination plant will have a capacity to produce 300,000 cubic metres of water per day. Once completed, it could be the largest IWP in Oman.
In a statement on its website, OPWP on Sunday announced the qualification process for developers through the launch of the request for qualification (RfQ) document. Interested developers will have the opportunity till March 18 to apply for the pre-qualification process.
‘OPWP is planning the addition of new water desalination capacity of approximately 300,000 cubic metres per day which will be located in Ghubra, Muscat. The IWP is to be developed as a private sector project by an appropriately qualified developer’, OPWP said.
Christened as Ghubra III IWP, the proposed plant would come up near the existing Ghubra IWP, which has a capacity to purify around 191,000 cubic metres of sea water and is managed by Muscat City Desalination Co. OPWP generally sets up IWPs on build, own and operate (BOO) scheme basis, which enables the operator to run the plant till the end of water purchase agreement.
Oman, which mostly relies on desalinated water, has been witnessing a robust growth of 15 per cent in the demand for past few years thanks to the demographic and economic growth.
