DUBAI – An innovative Water Harp was unveiled for the very first time at the Paraguay Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on Wednesday, aiming to bring the voice of water from the heart of South America to the rest of the world.

The harp, which has water instead of metal as its strings, is a unique creation, producing the same musical notes as its stringed counterparts with an accompanying sound of water – as well as transmitting a message of environmental awareness.

Preservation and the sustainable management of water is of prime importance to Paraguay, which is a land-locked country in South America, and the Water Harp gives voice to water, so that the world can listen to its sound and take action on its conservation.

The Water Harp project is spearheaded by Sonidos de la Tierra, an innovative social entrepreneurship programme that keeps sustainability at the heart of its enterprise. The music band was declared Artist for Peace by UNESCO, and is leading the way in creating communities that promote sustainable values and good citizen practices through their projects and music schools.

Fernando Ambere Feliciangeli built the Water Harp during the COVID-19 pandemic, and said the idea germinated when he heard the sound of flowing water, of varying pressures, running through the kitchen tap. He said: “I’m passionate about music and intrigued with mechanics due to my background in engineering and architecture. It was a challenge to turn the idea into reality, but it was important to draw attention to this vital global resource.”

Feliciangeli recycled pieces of metal, plastic and firehose, which would have been discarded, to build the elegant musical instrument. Individual components were transported to the UAE and assembled at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Visitors can experience the Water Harp at the Paraguay Pavilion, located in the Mobility District, until 3 February. A ‘H2O Sounds of Water Orchestra’ concert with the Water Harp is scheduled for 1730 GST on 5 February at Expo’s Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre.
