GE Healthcare and its partner Advanced Technology Company to provide advanced diagnostic imaging systems
Dubai, UAE: GE Healthcare and its partner Advanced Technology Company have been awarded by the Kuwait Ministry of Health to support the expansion of Al Amiri Hospital as part of the Ministry's strategic healthcare infrastructure modernization plan. The new partnership, announced at Arab Health 2016, the region's premier healthcare event, will provide a range of healthcare technologies, including CT and MR devices, to improve diagnostic capabilities.
Al Amiri is one of nine hospitals being refurbished and expanded by the Ministry in line with the National Development Plan (Kuwait Vision 2030) to help meet the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancers and cardiovascular conditions. According to the World Health Organization, NCDs account for nearly 76 percent of deaths in Kuwait, as of 2011, with coronary heart disease estimated to be the single leading cause1 of NCD death as per the Dasman Diabetes Institute. The modernization of the hospitals, therefore, places a strong focus on enhancing diagnostic capabilities.
GE Healthcare and Advanced Technology Company are providing an exceptional suite of healthcare solutions that help enable earlier diagnosis of non-communicable diseases at Al Amiri which already serves over 400,000 patients annually. The expansion will double existing capacity, adding over 450 beds, and includes the construction, maintenance and introduction of new medical equipment for a new hospital wing.
Ghassan M. Mamlouk, CEO of Advanced Technology Company, said: "These advanced diagnostic technologies will enable healthcare professionals to identify NCDs earlier, thus potentially reducing the cost of treatment and increasing the efficiency of care. GE Healthcare is a global leader in advanced diagnostic and healthcare solutions, and through the partnership, we are bringing excellent patient care for the people of Kuwait."
Maher Abouzeid, President & CEO of GE Healthcare Eastern Growth Markets, said: "This new contract builds on our ongoing partnership with the Ministry of Health to serve as a key technology provider in Kuwait. Over the years, we have installed advanced solutions that promote improved diagnostics for various MoH facilities in Kuwait. We are committed to bringing the newest technologies that will help support MoH in achieving its goals to modernize the country's healthcare infrastructure further, and deliver better patient outcomes."
Technologies to be installed at Al Amiri include:
· GE Healthcare's Discovery PET/CT 710 - a hybrid imaging system which combines PET, used to record molecular activity that is indicative of rapid tumor growth, with CT, which focuses on anatomic location or the physical size of a tumor. The two images together provide both the location of the tumor in the body and the molecular activity in the tumor.
Changes in tumor function often precede changes in tumor size, so PET/CT systems can allow early indication of disease progression, and a patient's response to treatment. This potentially allows oncologists to modify treatment strategies to help improve patients' quality of life and overall patient outcomes, whilst potentially reducing the cost burden of ineffective treatment.
· GE Optima MR450w scanner - an MRI machine designed for a better patient experience because the area where the patient lies is wider than in conventional scanners. It is also more comfortable to lie on thanks to the system's GEM Suite - patient friendly, flexible 'coils' which help minimize anxiety and motion during an exam by naturally following the contours of the human body. This can prevent the need for repeat scans.
· GE's Revolution EVO - a CT scanner that allows clinicians to perform more exams in less time, while providing high quality images and less dose. This could translate into a higher workflow efficiency for the hospital.
