Following the launch of the Siemens Student Award, a US$ 45,000 contest aimed at challenging the minds of the region's college and university students to come up with a concept for 'How to build sustainable cities in the desert?', Siemens has announced the handing over of its educational Siemens Experiment Kit for energy and electricity to the German International School, Abu Dhabi.
As part of its continual commitment to developing local talent in the Middle East, a delegation from Siemens, including Joachim Kundt, CEO Siemens LLC, visited the German International School and presented the principal, Gerald Miebs, with10 Siemens developed Siemens Experiment Kits.
The Siemens Experiment Kit contains equipment for over 60 experiments designed to allow researchers young and old to explore and answer questions related to issues of oil & gas and renewable energy, as well as power generation, transmission and distribution. The kit demonstrates how individual technologies are interconnected and how they interact, as well as conveying knowledge about the entire energy system and showing the way to a sustainable energy supply now and in the future.
As Joachim Kundt, CEO Siemens LLC, explains; "The Siemens Experiment Kit is a tool to enable the understanding of energy concepts and technologies in a hands-on, interactive way. We are delighted to work with the German International School, with it's focus on Science and Technology, to allow it to enhance the learning of its students in a way that makes often complicated subjects interesting and comprehensible, and we look forward to interacting with further schools".
The German International School has 320 students from 14 different nationalities and recently implemented a program for technical topics.
Principal of the school, Gerald Miebs, said: "It was great to welcome Mr. Kundt and the Siemens team to our school and receive the Siemens Experiment kits. At the school we are placing added emphasis on the subjects contained within the kit, so it will be very useful to use the kits to support technical know-how in a way that is fun and engaging for the students.
Committed to developing education in the region, Siemens has also recently set-up a Graduate Program to offer opportunities for graduates from Universities in the region. For the UAE launch, over 2500 applicants applied for the program and from this, eleven, including five from the Masdar Institute, were chosen to attend the Siemens Assessment Day on the 19th June in Dubai.
As Harry Hollier, Head of HR, Siemens Middle East, explains; "The Siemens Graduate Program is being launched across four countries in the Middle East, consisting of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE, and this is a strategic decision we have made at Siemens to develop and invest in regional talent.
"We have a close cooperation with Masdar and the high quality of graduates from the Institute is evident in the roster of shortlisted candidates. These graduates, as well as participating graduates from other institutions, have a fantastic opportunity to gain employment with Siemens and make an active contribution to future business success."
The Siemens Graduate Program includes a development program for young professionals, which involves a two-year rotating program, made up of three challenging assignments based on the skill set of the candidate and business demand, coupled with extensive training and mentoring. The target result is a management position with Siemens in the region.
The Siemens Student Award encourages bachelor and master students enrolled at accredited universities in the Middle East and Pakistan to submit essays of up to 500 words that deal with one central question 'How to build sustainable cities in the desert?'. As well as the prize money, the winners will be presented with internship opportunities at Siemens Middle East.
Submissions for the Siemens Student Award are still open and must be made online via the website: www.siemens.com/studentaward. The deadline for all entries is end of day on Sunday, 31 July 2011.
