Works of Dhs47 million project begin

Dubai, 12 October 2006

Dubai Municipality has begun the works of a Dhs47 million project to build semi-Olympic swimming pools in four sports clubs of Dubai.

According to Rashad Bukhash, Director of General Projects Department at the municipality, the pools, which will be set up in Al Ahli, Al Wasl, Shabab and Al Nasr clubs, are expected to be ready by August 2007. The new facility will offer coaching to aspiring swimmers in Dubai in line with international standards.

"This project will boost the overall performance of the four clubs as budding athletes will benefit from the high-level training in order to participate in local and international championships," said Bukhash.

He added that the project comprises of a full-fledged training facility in swimming in each of the four clubs. The facility would consist a semi-Olympic swimming pool with a total area of 312.5 square meters, a stadium with a capacity of 340 people, health club, cafeteria, changing rooms, toilets and administrative offices.

The building would be centrally air-conditioned and fitted with a state-of-the-art water treatment system and electronic score boards - all in line with international standards set by authorised sports bodies.

In 2002, Dubai Municipality had undertaken development works at Al Nasr and Al Ahli sports clubs at a total cost of over Dhs22 million. The works, which were undertaken in line with the specifications drawn up by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), included a press area with seats for journalists, TV and radio commentators, interview rooms, 16 camera posts, TV & radio studios, and a media centre equipped with telephone, fax, Internet and email facilities. There were four changing rooms for players, a mini gymnasium for warming up before the matches, special rooms for dope testing, medical examination, and first aid.
