UAE, Dubai : Rashid Hospital is now the biggest hospital in the country-- with 786 beds-- following the inauguration of its trauma center expansion on Monday.

Two floors that include 159 beds have been added to Rashid Hospital's trauma center as part of the new expansion inaugurated by His Highness Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and President of Dubai Health Authority (DHA) on Monday.

Sixty-six beds have been added to the second floor, which will be designated for intensive care, including internal medicine, neurosurgery and general surgery. This is an increase of 50 per cent in intensive care beds.

The third floor on the other hand will have 93 beds used for general surgery, specialized surgery and fractures to name a few.

The expansion of Rashid Hospital's trauma center will better help cater to the 500-600 daily cases the center receives.

His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami, Chairman of the Board and Director-General of DHA said the expansion comes in line with the authority's vision to provide quality medical services that are at par with international standards. He added that the new expansion will be overseen by experienced doctors, nurses and technicians, who were chosen to ensure the satisfaction of patients.

Al Qatami said the expansion is part of a number of remarkable transformations in the field of medical services provided by the authority.

New Medical specializations

Dr Alya Mazrouei, CEO of Rashid Hospital said new medical specializations have also been added as part of the expansion, they include hand , liver and spine surgery, bone fractures and bariatric surgery. These specializations are part of the third floor expansions related to general surgery.

She added that high-quality technology has been added to the smart beds, including CPUs that track the status of the patient in bed to avoid cases of falling out of the bed--which is one of the indicators of excellence and quality in the hospital.

This high quality technology also ensures maintaining the status of the head (30 degrees) for brain stroke patients. It also ensure a straight position for the spine patients and a safe and healthy position for various patients, each according to his/her condition.

Dr Al Mazrouei said the expansion and new services will support DHA's strive to compete in medical tourism.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance is the President of the Dubai Health Authority and His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami is the Chairman of the Board and Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority.

The DHA's aim in Dubai is to provide an accessible, effective and integrated healthcare system, protect public health and improve the quality of life within the Emirate. This is a direct translation of the objectives of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Keeping the strategic plan in mind, the DHA's mission is to ensure access to health services, maintain and improve the quality of these services, improve the health status of nationals, residents and visitors and oversee a dynamic, efficient and innovative health sector.

In addition to overseeing the health sector for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA also focuses on providing services through DHA healthcare facilities including hospitals (Latifa, Dubai, Rashid and Hatta), specialty centres (e.g. the Dubai Diabetes Center) and DHA primary health centres spread throughout the Emirate of Dubai.

The main pillars of service delivery at DHA health facilities are quality, efficiency, patients and staff.  It is our aim to maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of DHA health services. An important aspect of the service delivery strategy is to focus on patients, their needs and satisfaction as well as attract, retain, nurture and support outstanding staff.

Prior to the establishment of the DHA, the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), which was established in 1973, was the functioning authority that almost exclusively focused on health service delivery.
