July 12, 2007 - Nissan Middle East celebrated the voting of Petra, Jordan's ancient Nabataean city, as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. The new architectural marvel was announced during a star-studded event which was held on July 7th in Lisbon, Portugal. The results were estimated by a poll of 100 million global online voters.

Nissan Middle East has launched an online campaign which ran in parallel with the global campaign of the '7 Wonders of the World Foundation' to support Petra. "We are extremely proud with the results of this campaign. It is a great honor to be part of this achievement which acknowledged Petra as one of the New 7 Seven Wonders of the World. We plan to continue our support for projects which aim at restoring and restructuring the heritage in the Middle East", commented Saleh Jafar, Senior Manager, Corporate Communications at Nissan Middle East.

Petra ranked second in highest votes. The seven 'wonders' chosen were Petra, the Great Wall of China, Brazil's statue of Christ the Redeemer, Peru's Machu Picchu, Mexico's Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, the Colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.  Nissan Middle East has actively supported the efforts to vote for Petra through print ads and online banners. The Nissan website channeled more than 2,500 votes over a period of one week.

Voters through the Nissan campaign were not only from the region but from various world destinations. A participant from Canada commented: "It's great corporate initiative; we wish to see more of such initiative by big companies supporting our cultural backgrounds and historical landmarks". Nissan Middle East will reward the participants by choosing a winner to receive a trip for two to enjoy the beauty of this treasure carved in stones.

"Petra is a great monument in the Middle East and acts as an attractive tourist destination. For Nissan Middle East this was an opportunity to encourage people to distinguish this beauty and support a Middle Eastern destination. This also reinforces Nissan's commitment to beauty and engineering, that the company has offered its customers throughout the years", added Jafar.
