The latest intelligence on how to stop traffic jams across the Middle East will be on show at the Gulf Traffic exhibition and conference to be held in Dubai.

The buzz phrase in the transport industry is Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and the very latest technology and the most up to date gizmos will be displayed at the showcase event from December 8-10 at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre.

'60% of the Gulf Traffic show is focused on ITS developments and we have many presentations on the very latest in this exciting field of development. If it's new it will be on show at Gulf Traffic,' said Davyd Farrell, Gulf Traffic Show Director.

The introduction of ITS in Europe has been instrumental in significantly reducing accidents and increasing safety. Now the Middle East wants to take a similar road.

The region's road and transportation sector is expanding faster than anywhere in the world. With roads becoming clogged with traffic almost as fast as road builders can paint the white lines on new tarmac, governments are increasingly turning to state-of-the-art technology is being employed to keep the wheels turning.

It's currently estimated that GCC states have more than US$300 million worth of ITS investments in the pipeline over the next five to 10 years. And the Gulf Road Engineering Society says ITS systems are high on the Gulf public sector agenda.

Among the ITS systems being highlighted is the Dubai Falcon project, a massive state-of-the-art ITS to try and cure the emirate's ever increasing traffic headache and improve road safety. Dubai Falcon is managed by infrastructure consulting firm Wilbur Smith which is a sponsor of Gulf Traffic.

System integrators, electrical contractors and electronic sign manufacturers are all involved in Dubai Falcon. Dynamic message signs and lane and speed control signalling are just some of the methods being employed in keeping with Dubai's commitment to e-Government through the use of advanced information and communication technologies.

Road sign specialist Electro Industries Dubai LLC will highlight its rapid expansion across the region and launch its new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) with dynamic message, lane and speed LED signage

"We are bidding for a contract from Dubai Municipality and we will introduce our Variable Message Signs at Gulf Traffic," said Tawfiq Abu Shaikha, Electro Industries Dubai LLC Regional Director.

"Traffic congestion is a relatively new phenomenon within the Gulf but one which is an increasing problem. Regional authorities are allocating huge budgets for new roads and systems to ease and control traffic flow and I.T.S. systems are high on the specification list," he added.

His company is also expanding its operations in Dubai by doubling its operational capacity by the end of the year. A new office has also been opened in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi. Qatar has been earmarked for company expansion with the opening of a new office and the commissioning of a new manufacturing plant.

Electro Industries, which has been in the signage industry for 25 years, also has offices and facilities in the Saudi cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Al Khobar and in Lebanon.

Turnover this year will be AED 30 million, rising to AED 40 million next year and adding another AED 10 million to reach AED 50 million in 2005.

"Due to the increase in oil income in the Gulf region over the past 40 years, the countries there have managed to achieve extraordinary results in the manufacturing and service sectors. And an outstanding infrastructure system has also been built and is being expanded all the time which is an important target for our company. The Middle East is a revolutionary market and a very important one for our company which has a high presence in the region and which uses the very best of the new high technology available," Abu Shaikha added.

Among the organizations supporting Gulf Traffic is ITS Canada; ITS India; South African Society for Intelligent Transport Systems and ITS America. Among the publications supporting the event is ITS International and Traffic Technology International.

More than 150 companies from 30 countries are exhibiting at Gulf Traffic, which has the official support of municipalities throughout the GCC. For the first time the exhibitor line-up includes organizations from South Africa, Taiwan, Spain and Australia. Entry to the exhibition is free to all traffic and transport industry professionals. A specialized event has also been added to the Gulf Traffic programme – the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Rail Congress.
