H.E. Shaikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minsiter of Oil and GPIC Chairman announced on Tuesday 15th April, 2003 at a press conference that the Company won the His Highness Mohamed bin Rashd Al Maktoum Award for Arab Managemetn afor the Outstanding Enterprise Category.

His Excellency Shakh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa praised this significant achievemtn by the Company considering it a source of pride fo rhte Bahrian industry and a national accomplishment to the credit of the Company that had enjoyed numerous achievements in various fields.

He praised the support and encouragement received by the Company from His Majesty the King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister and His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.

On this occasion, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager said he was extremely pleased an proud to receive on behalf of the Company this prestigious award that was not only a cause of pride for the Company but also for Arab organizations in general and Bahraini business organizations in particular.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said this occasion was a very special and happy event as this prestigious award would be a strong motive for making further contributions and enhancing the standards of productivity and developing product quality while maintaining the highest standards of safety, occupational health and clean environment while seeking to develop the human resources.

GPIC General Manager attributed the Company' success in making this excellent achievement as growth of its business to the continuous support and encouragement received by GPIC from the Kingdom's wise leadership.

He added the Company's win last year of the His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa Award for Excellence in Industry for Major Companies has gone a long way towards the determination and continuous hard work enabling GPIC to receive further Arab and international awards. This Award has been a prelude to give credit to the Kingdom of Bahrain and recognition of its leadership who quality the citizens to manae successful organizations.

Commenting on the criteria used in the selection of GPIC for winning this Award, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said the Award Committee has reviewed conditions in Arab organizations throughout the Arab world spanning various fields not only the petrochemical sector subject to very strict criteria:

First:  Leadership and achievements of the management team and its commitment towards excellence and continuous improvement in the overall performance and its role in motivation and development of human resources.

Second: Strategic planning and extent of the organizations' commitment to draw up an apply integrated strategic plans for all its operations and activates.

Third:  Innovative initiatives and diversity of creative efforts and achievements of the enterprise and suitability of the innovative environment in the enterprise and approach to encouraging creative initiative in the business.

Fourth: Management and electronic business and how far the enterprise makes use of the modern electronic technologies in its operations.

Fifth:  Human resource management and the enterprise's efforts in planning and developing human resources.

Sixth:  Customer services and extent of the enterprise's commitment to offering an excellent customer service, identifying their expectations and communicating with them.

Seventh: Business procedures management with focus on the approach followed in the design, review and development of work procedures and systems in the enterprise.

Eighth: Resource management and extent of the presence and application of an effective approach to ensure optimum benefit from financial resource and IT as well as property management. 

Ninth:  Commitment to the community and extent of the enterprise's commitment to community service and communication with it.

Tenth: Overall enterprise's performance and the interest of the business in measuring the product's quality and general improvement of performance

The above criteria should take into account the Company's own initiatives and other activities that distinguish it form other companies.

In fact, GPIC is considered as leading example in a wide rang of areas, In the field of productivity, the Company has achieved record figures in Ammonia, Urea and Methanol production with a high degree of efficiency. The  total output has reached more that 1.4 million metric tons of petrochemicals annually. Such products are marketed in the global markets that require high levels of quality and use of sophisticated technologies as well as penetration of world markets.

As for profitability, we have been very successful in making lucrative profits that have enabled us to pay dividends to the Shareholders on a regular basis and to strengthen the Company's financial position. Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed noted that this excellent performance has had its economic impact through the continuous investments in the development of the Company's equipment and facilities using the latest technologies available in the world markets. As par of the Company production cost and overhead reduction, GPIC has drawn up intensive maintenance programmes for internal manufacture of spare parts according to international specifications in addition to benefiting from the local manufacturers.

Culminating the Company's successes, the $170 million urea project was launched and was inaugurated by His Highness the Prime Minister of 3rd March, 19988. The pant has an annual output of 560,000 metric tons of high quality urea granules and uses the most advanced technologies to further consolidate the petrochemical and fertilizer industry in Bahrain. The project was completed with a high level of efficiency by relaying on the skills of the trained Bahraini manpower with the assistance of local contractors. The project was completed in a record period of time.

Commenting on human resources, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said GPIC has a special focus on Bahrainisation and development of human resources believing that competitiveness and continuous success do not only stem from the fixed assts, equipment and technologies, as their are similar organizations in their equipment and operation. What distinguishes one organization from the other are the qualified, creative and motivated human resources within an integrated its belief in the importance of creating a comprehensive corporate culture for developing such elements.

The strategy followed by the Company has been focused on by specialized studies that have proven their worth and have been based upon a new management approach that ensures the continuity of corporate success.

Such principles and strategic approach followed in the Company depends upon the theory of strategic planning known as MOSIF, which means the total strategic management of the enterprise. There is also the theory of motivation and corporate culture known as CREAMOC, which means the integrated forces of creativity and motivation within a corporate culture that embraces such forces. These two theories are to be included n the English language dictionary and are being taught in a number of local and international universities.

As an example of the significant programmes that serve the Company's objectives for development of human resources and participation in decision making and enhancing a sense of loyalty, the Company applies a staff suggestion scheme to be evaluated  and implemented according to the recognized international systems. Such creative ideas could have positive returns upon the Company and employees not only from the material aspects but also in terms of enhancing performance levels throughout the operations.

He added the areas of safety, environment and occupational health are the most important objectives of the Company and is operations. The designs of the various plants are compatible with the international specifications and local regulations in the areas of safety, health and environment in drawing up the preliminary specifications. In this respect, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed praised the company's achievements in these areas that gained  an international reputation of which every worker should be proud. With such achievements, there are major challenges to ensure the continuity of growth while maintaining the Company's gains as the first Gulf joint venture launched in the region upon which many hopes are pinned for fruitful Gulf economic integration.

In the area of quality and environment management, GPIC is amony the leading industrial companies in the region that has gained double recognition of the quality management system ISO 9002 in 1995 and environmental management system ISO 14001 in 1999. These awards are considered as an international recognition of the Total Management System applied by the Company in all its activities, making the company gain a prestigious international standing.

As for the environmental issues that  undoubtedly affect the Company's, there is its concern with the environment and its major environmental activities that go beyond compliance with the required laws of the environment. GPIC has already launched several environmental and charity projects including the Charity Fish Farm, Charity Vegetable Farm and Bird Sanctuary. Even though modest in size, environment around the Company's Complex. For example, the Company grows 30,000 sea-bream fishes annually. Some of the fish is donated to the needy people in neighboring villages and the rest are released in the territorial waters to reflect the concern with wildlife and interest in natural reproduction to enrich sea-life.

In addition, the company has developed a green patch and grown palm trees with the produce given to the needy people. In addition, the Bird Sanctuary provides the natural resources for helping migrating birds to adapt and reproduce in the Complex' neighborhood and to enhance the beautiful landscape around the industrial area. The latest of its environmental projects is a garden for medicinal plants and herbs aiming at safeguarding these important Bahraini plants that are vital and important for the local population.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said the Company plans with all determination to continue its efforts to maintain the environment believing that industrial development should be linked to the responsible care for the environment.

Commenting on the implication of this prestigious award, Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed said that this award was a major quality transformation on the local and Gulf levels to excellence throughout the Arab world not only for industrial companies but also throughout all the private Arab organizations. This Award is a cause of pride for the Bahrain industry that motivates workers in industry and encourages investors from outside Bahrain and from the brotherly Gulf states in particular to invest in such downstream industries that support the Bahrain policies of diversifying the sources of income and employing Bahrain manpower. This Award also provides a major incentive for going ahead with such project encourages the company and shareholders to approve and implement them making GPIC a true living example of successful joint Gulf ventures.

Dr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to HE Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil and GPIC Chairman for his role in supporting and developing the Company qualifying it to win this prestigious award. He also tanked the Shareholders namely the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait for their continuous backing to the Company and its expansion. He thanked the members of the Board for their support for GPIC.

Meanwhile, he conveyed his thanks to all the employees for their hard work, loyalty and team spirit.
