• Topcon Healthcare’s fully robotic Maestro2 uses artificial intelligence and is available to all GluCare patients
  • Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults, affecting one third of diabetics

Dubai: GluCare Integrated Diabetes Center and Topcon Healthcare, a leading developer of diagnostic equipment for the ophthalmic community, are announcing that they have joined forces to introduce the region’s first use of artificial intelligence (AI) in retinal screenings.

Under the partnership, Topcon Healthcare’s fully automated Maestro2 diagnostic hardware will be available to all patients of GluCare as part of their standard care package. The Maestro2 is an advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) system that uses AI to provide instantaneous diagnostic retinal screenings. The technology was made possible thanks to a partnership between Topcon and Thirona, a tech company that develops automated medical analysis tools.

The new technology is in line with GluCare’s innovative world-first model of care which uses wearable and connected technology to allow Remote Continuous Data Monitoring as part of its standard care model. The clinic also holds the honour of being the first within the Middle East region to use Digital Therapeutics in a clinical setting.

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults - affecting one third of people with diabetes.[1] Despite this fact, retinal screening is still not offered in many diabetes centers and less than half of diabetic patients undergo regular retinal screenings.

With the WHO estimating that diabetes is set to grow across the region to more than 42 million people by 2030, GluCare’s Co-Founder and Managing Director, Dr Ihsan AlMarzooqi says that employing innovative technology is key for improved patient outcomes, as well as better savings for patients and insurers alike:

“At GluCare, we employ technology as a humanizing force, enabling and empowering patients to successfully manage their condition. This extends to all stages of the patient journey, from our in-clinic workflows through to the remote and connected care we offer in between their visits. Our partnership with Topcon further bolsters this transformative model of care by making retinal screening accessible to all of our patients, as well as by employing innovative AI-driven technology that is as precise as it is time and cost effective.

Opened in September 2020, GluCare is currently accepting new patients. Insurance providers currently accepted at GluCare include NAS/Neuron, AXA, Al Madallah, Mednet and Nextcare.
