Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has become the first organization in the Gulf region to set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets based on the Science Based Target initiative, a program from the Carbon Disclosure Project, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the World Wildlife Fund.

The initiative aims to provide science-based targets to companies, so that they have a clear understanding of how much and how quickly they need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce carbon emissions, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi deploys a ‘greenhouse gas tool’ to quantify and exhaustively log the exact amounts of greenhouse gas emissions the hospital produces.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has been auditing its emissions over the last two years according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, working with international environment consultants.

Mawadhah Al Hashemi, Sustainability Manager at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, explains: “The healthcare sector has a key role to play in reducing the urban environmental footprint, and we are pursuing a number of programs to promote energy efficiency and reduce waste. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi continues to implement new programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as cut energy and water consumption, even as the hospital continues to grow and welcome more patients.”

Among the key projects, the hospital’s Sustainability and Food Services teams have started a Food Waste Dehydration program that converts food waste into organic byproduct. The dried food waste is being used to produce compost for the hospital’s landscapes and gardens.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has launched a range of energy- and water-saving measures in 2018, as part of its wider strategy to reduce total energy consumption and limit its environmental footprint.

The program has successfully reduced the consumption of potable (drinkable) water by 26%, consumption of chilled water by 5%, and SNG by 42% with a diesel consumption reduction of 8% as of December 2018, delivering significant savings in reduced costs.

Other new programs introduced in 2018 include a smart building program to control temperatures and the implementation of an exterior light photocell control, switch to LED lights in carpark, and switching the HVAC system on occupied and unoccupied mode to reduce energy consumption. In addition, the hospital installed Ozone and UV systems for condensate water treatment used for irrigation and installed soil conditioners to reduce water requirements.

The hospital has improved its average waste recycling rate to 28% in 2018, building on the 9% average achieved when the program started in 2015.

“We will continue to highlight our sustainability results to support the wider dialogue around energy efficiency and develop new ways to become more resource-efficient,” Al Hashemi concluded.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi became the largest hospital in the GCC to receive a LEED Gold sustainability certificate for new construction in April 2014 and is currently targeting LEED-EBOM (GOLD) Certification.

The hospital has been designed to include an innovative ‘double skin’ exterior, which provides an air buffer between the indoor and outdoor environment, reducing the amount of cooling required.
