On 1st July, the City of Porto together with the Portuguese Embassy in the UAE, Emirates Airlines and the Ismaili Centre Dubai hosted a presentation on Porto as a tourist and business destination on the eve of the inaugural flight by Emirates Airlines between Dubai and Porto.
Ricardo Valente, Deputy Mayor for the City of Porto, led a presentation to an audience of 180 guests at the Ismaili Centre Dubai which explored the key attributes and potential of the city of Porto as a tourist and business destination. Councillor Valente highlighted the fact that Porto Historic Centre had been declared a Mankind Heritage site by UNESCO in 1996. He went on to explain that this tradition and history when combined with uncomplicated and straightforward modernity, rising investment sentiment, business dynamism, skilled human resources, a strong scientific and academic community, represented a powerful recipe for growth and success.
Porto, Portugal’s second city, whose Metropolitan area is home to some 2.5 million residents, gave its name to Portugal. It is situated on the mouth of the River Douro, whose steep Northern slopes are home to one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions and whose vines are responsible for Port Wine.
Emirates Airlines is clearly betting on the Dubai - Porto route for significant future tourism and business. A spokesman for the Airline said… “Travellers in northern Portugal will now have a convenient and direct flight option to our Dubai hub, from where they can seamlessly access Emirates’ global network, particularly to destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. This new service also opens up a new and exciting destination for travellers from across our network.
“The allure of Porto, with its rich historic and cultural attractions, world famous Port wine production and location on the Douro River, has seen the city enjoy an increase in visitor numbers. Our new service will therefore contribute further to the economic growth of Porto and the wider Northern Region.
