MUSCAT -- In light of the recent Royal Directives issued to curtail employee unrest, protests and grievances, and as a way of preventing the need for such occurrences in the future by ensuring that legitimate demands are met, the Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) organised a workshop on 'Labour Unions - Concept and Legal Frameworks', at Inter-Continental Hotel Muscat, yesterday.
A panel made up of MEDC's General Manager, Zaher bin Abdullah al Abri; Ministry of Manpower representative, Yaqub bin Ali al Kharbushi; Attorney at Law, Said bin Saad al Shihri, of Al Shihri Legal Consultants and Advocates Office; and the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions representative, Muhammad bin Talib al Mardhouf al Sadi, addressed members of the workshop on the legally sanctioned regulatory framework for collective negotiation.
The workshop was held as a way of alleviating employee grievances and meeting their legitimate demands; in the wake of recently held protests, strikes and sit-ins witnessed in the electricity sector.
The workshop's objectives are aimed at raising the awareness of employees about the importance of regulating collective bargaining within the Sultanate's approved legal framework and through trade unions.
In this way, employees can submit their demands in a legal way, through their union representatives, and have their grievances, demands, issues, and the like, dealt with in a smooth, quick, efficient and fair manner.
Further, it raises employee awareness about the system for the formation and registration of labour unions, as well as on related operational matters, initiation of action and the role of members. It also emphasises the balance between obtaining the legitimate rights of staff and the performance of their duties to client and shareholder expectations.
