Osaka (ONA) - Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, arrived here yesterday on a visit to Japan lasting several days.
Macki will hold talks with Japanese officials that will focus on fields of existing cooperation between the Sultanate and Japan, particularly on ways of activating investment and exploring opportunities for greater cooperation between the public and private sectors.
Macki was received on his arrival by Ahmed bin Yousuf Al Zarafi, the Sultanate's ambassador to Japan.
The minister will also confer with private sector officials. His discussions with them will cover joint ventures between the Sultanate and Japan and South Korea respectively in the field of maritime transport and oil and gas-based projects.
Macki will also visit ports and shipbuilding facilities in Japan and South Korea to follow up work progress on four gas carriers, (Ibra, Nizwa, Ibri, and Salalah) which are being built there for the Omani Maritime Transport Company (OMTC).
Nizwa carrier is currently being built at the dry dock of Kawasaki Co. for shipbuilding in Japan and will join service at the end of this year, while Mitsubishi Co. for heavy industries is building Ibri which will enter service by mid-2006. Salalah is scheduled to enter service at the end of this year and Ibra, which will enter service in mid-2006, are being built by the Korean company Samsung.
On receiving the four carriers, the OMTC will have a fleet of six carriers including the ships Muscat and Sohar which are already in service.
The minister is accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of National Economy, Oman Oil Company and OMTC.
The delegation was seen off from Muscat by the Japanese ambassador to the Sultanate.
