ALGIERS, Feb 17 (KUNA) -- Five Kuwaiti actors gave an outstanding performance in a stage comedy called "The name is woman," which was presented at the Higher Institute for Comic Art in Algiers.

The presentation, which was part of the Kuwaiti Cultural Week in Algeria, received a long standing ovation from the Algerian audience.

The theatrical work, which was written by Fahad Al Falah and directed by Abdel-Aziz Saffar, revolves around the theme of Arab women, who are downgraded and underestimated in their society.

The central part in the stage comedy was eloquently and elegantly played by artist Abir Yahya, who performed the role of an average Arab woman claiming a right to make her way in everyday life side by side with men, including fathers, sons, husbands and brothers.

The one-hour-long melodramatic work is aimed at refuting old ideas restricting the role of women to home-bound duties essentially raising children.

The stage comedy, which showed that women were capable of matching men in professional life and society, ended with a hopeful note looking forward to a "better future for Arab women."

The Kuwaiti cultural week in Algeria, which continues till next Wednesday, is part of Algeria's cultural festival that opened Wednesday and was entitled "Algeria capital of Arab culture."

The Kuwaiti week continues with lectures, poetry and artistic evenings by the Hamad bin Hussein artistic folk arts group.
