KUWAIT: A coalition of political groups in the Iraqi Parliament has called on Kuwait to review its stance towards Baghdad to avoid more tension in the region.
Iraqi MP Jawad Al-Bolani called upon Kuwait yesterday to review its position on Iraq, warning that if Kuwait continues its current policy, which he said is harmful to Iraq, this could might create a state of tension in the region. He added that threatening language does not solve problems, adding that pausing and resolving all outstanding problems is the only guarantee of building good relations between the neighbors.
Another Iraqi MP, Alya Nateef, said, meanwhile, that Kuwait's decision to continue with the construction of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port means that Iraqi parliamentarians are busy forming committees to discuss the issue. She called for the construction process to be slowed down in order to resolve problems between the neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, Kuwait's Ministry of Interior (MoI) reportedly intends to make changes to the electronic security system on the Kuwait-Iraq border between Um Qasr and Salmi. According to an MoI insider, the changes are part of an updating strategy which requires the introduction of new equipment, including highly sensitive subterranean apparatus which can detect attempts to cross the border from a distance of up to 70 meters. The new system could be operational by the first quarter of 2012, said the insider.
In other news, the Central Bank has approved the resignation of Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr. Amani Bouresli from the Burgan Bank's board of directors after she assumed the ministerial post, making the necessary amendments to the Central Bank's official records. The bank also approved the appointment of Dr. Bouresli's replacement in the Burgan Bank post, Samir Khanshant, for the remaining period up until 2013 when the next election for the board of directors will be held.
