More than 150 people will take part in the first leisure fishing competition of this season at the Fujairah International Marine Club on Friday.
Registration is open for residents of Fujairah for a family fun day. With the temperature getting cooler, all kinds of fish come to the Gulf of Oman. This helps fishermen and amateur anglers to catch more.
Ahmed Ibrahim, Director of the Fujairah International Marine Club, said: "With more fish coming to our waters, our club is expecting a large turnout of anglers who must not be less than 15 years of age."
All boats taking part must be registered and approved by the Harbour Master at the club.
"Boats must have registration and navigation licences, fuel and water, life jackets, VHF radio or cellular phones, first aid kits and a fire extinguisher. Any boat not having such arrangements will not be allowed to participate."
There will be a party after the prize distribution. Ibrahim said there will be more than 15 fishing boats in the contest, each able to carry up to 15 people. There will also be some boats from the Port of Fujairah and some from the club.
"The boats will leave the harbour of the club and sail to certain spots in the sea where fish are plenty to enable them to get good catches," he said.
In all, there will be eight prizes for the winners.
The following are the permitted fishing methods and competition regulations in a nutshell:* Registration is open to all residents of Fujairah. The competition begins at 10.30am and ends at 4pm.
* Permitted fishing methods are rod and reel or handling, but no nets will be allowed.
* All kinds of fishing lures and baits are permitted, but if smaller fish are used as bait, their tail should be cut so as not to be considered as catch.
* There will be eight prizes: The first three will go for the heaviest fish. Three others will be for longest fish, one will go for the most unusual catch, and another for best woman competitor.
