Shrimp farms should be expanded across the country in view of Iran's limited aquaculture reserves. Stating the above, head of Iran's Fisheries Organization (IFO), Aminollah Taqavi Motlaq added that shrimp farming is not only a source of income but it also plays an important role in job creation.

He listed shrimp breeding twice a year in the provinces of Hormuzgan, Sistan-Baluchestan and Bushehr, growth in production in Bushehr and controlling White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) as among the measures taken in the sector in the Iranian year which ended on March 20.

The organization, he said, is responsible for supplying farmed shrimp to the domestic market, he added.

Organizing shrimp food festivals and promoting the culture of seafood consumption are among the other programs on the organization's agenda, he noted.

The official said the government must pay subsidies to shrimp farmers to support the industry.

Also, director general of Bushehr Fisheries Department said that about 3,200 tons of cultured shrimp were produced in 73 farms across this southern province last year.

He predicted that close to 1,400 hectares would be allocated for shrimp breeding and about 4,000 tons of shrimp would be produced.

Earlier, Managing Director of Iran Seafood Farm and Exports Cooperatives Arsalan Qasemi pointed to over 2,000 km of coastline in south of the country, saying Iran has the capacity to produce close to 400,000 tons of shrimp annually.

Qasemi continued that based on FAO statistics, global shrimp output stands at three million tons, of which China alone produces 1.2 million tons.
