Ibrahim Ashmawy, Head of the Internal Trade Development Authority, said that the e-commerce market in Egypt reached EGP 40bn. This div represents only 10% of the actual volume of online trade dealings as the rest is conducted through informal ways.

E-commerce plays a big role in developing small businesses, he added, noting that the spread of coronavirus and its repercussions contributed to the growth of online trade.

He added that the coming period will witness maximizing the role of e-commerce under the umbrella of the Egyptian Commodities Exchange, which will witness the circulation of commodities through an electronic platform.

Ashmawy revealed that the Authority cooperates with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to draft an e-commerce law.

He added that coronavirus contributed to an increase in the share of grocery products in the market, after electronic devices dominated the online trading market for a long time.
