DUBAI - The Dubai Transport Corporation, in cooperation with Dubai Municipality, has commenced operations of four new buses on Sharjah routes.
The move is part of the corporation's efforts to meet the increasing demand on inter-emirates transport and provide its customers with adequate transport, according to Mohyammed Obaid Al Mulla, Director-General of the corporation.
The new service is a result of an extensive cooperation between the corporation and Dubai Municipality, where the latter has played a major role in the development of roads and the provision of infrastructure services and facilities.
"We had undertaken several studies that clearly showed the need to increase the services between Dubai and Sharjah due to the heavy traffic between the two emirates. We hope that the new service will contribute in easing the traffic on the roads linking the two emirates and will meet the growing transport requirements for its residents," Mr Al Mulla said.
The cost of the trip to Sharjah costs Dh5 and the routes have been designed to serve highly-populated and dense areas. The first route starts from Satwa, passing by Al Wahda Street and ends on Rolla Street in Sharjah.
The second route will start from the Gold Souq, passes by Al Wahda and ends in Rolla area. The third route will start from Karama, passes by Al Wahda before proceeding to Rolla Street. The fourth route will start from Salahuddin Street in Deira, passes by Al Wahda and ends at Rolla Street.
"We hope that this new service will help reduce traffic congestion on the road linking Dubai and Sharjah as well as contribute in restricting such practices as smuggling passengers and the illegal use of private taxis as a means of transport," said Mr Al Mulla.
