Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has started work on the second phase of the ‘L’ power/water desalination plant in Jebel Ali, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on 1 June. The $900mn project will produce 1,200mw of power and 55mn gallons/day of desalinated water once complete, DEWA Managing Director and CEO Sa΄id Muhammad al-Tayir said, adding the plant was designed to cope with short-term projections for UAE power and water demand. It is being developed by a consortium led by Mitsubishi and Toshiba, which have been responsible for installing gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators and auxiliary boilers and back-pressure steam turbines. France’s Alstom built the 400kV substation, a contract to install overhead lines linking the power plant to the DEWA network was won by Emirates Trading Agency and Italy’s Fisia Italiampianti was awarded the desalination plant contract (MEES, 20 October 2003).
